It is no longer an Ofsted requirement to undertake training that has been produced or delivered by the Local Authorities including Safeguarding Children (Since September 2014) this has given everyone the freedom to seek their own training and not be restricted to courses chosen for them.  Some local authorities and organisations infer that a level 2 in childcare is required to register as a Childminder, this however is only requested by Ofsted if you are joining the voluntary part of the childcare register. This is a part of the childcare register often used by nannies caring for children in the child’s home and would not be inspected by Ofsted.

The ofsted website states

In no particular order, you will need to do the following:

  1. Get a criminal records check (enhanced DBS check). If you are working in your own home, anyone over 16 who lives with you will also need one. It usually takes up to 6 weeks but it can sometimes take longer. You will get a certificate in the post. There’s more information about this in our criminal records check guide.
  2. Fill in the health declaration form and get it signed by your GP. Your GP may charge for this.
  3. Complete a first aid qualification for people who work with children. You need to do a full paediatric first aid course if you will be working with children under 5. Ask your local council or look online for courses in your area.
  4. Find out if you need any training. You don’t have to do a particular course, but if you’ll be looking after children under 5 you need to show Ofsted you can meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage.

If you are planning on caring for children aged 0 – 8 you will be joining the 2 registers below

  • the Early Years Register to look after children up to age 5 (from birth to 31 August after their 5th birthday)
  • the Childcare Register to look after children aged 5 to 7

Join both registers if you plan to look after children of all ages up to 8.

Fig understands and delivers training that meets the Ofsted criteria of CPD and meets the EYFS requirements.

Those wishing to become Childminders may find the Ofsted registration process a daunting challenge but our team understand what is needed to keep you on the right track.  If you undertake our course for becoming a registered Childminder (Pre-registration Homebased Childcare PHC) a 1 hour home consultation visit (depending on location) is offered at a significantly reduced rate. This visit will assist you to prepare for your first Ofsted inspection.

Our consultants are not just experts in the pre-registration process, as a registered Childminder you may choose to have one of our consultants visit you to give further advice on your setting and/or paperwork.  Consultancy visits can be arranged any time during your career as a Childminder.

Safeguarding Children (June)

We understand Childminders can often feel isolated when dealing with the safeguarding and welfare of children in their care. It is essential you know what to do what to do if you are worried a child is being abused. This course will enable you to implement the latest EYFS guidelines. This is a refresher course and is therefore suitable for those that currently hold a safeguarding certificate that was completed no more than 2 years ago.
